Today I depart academia to join Fathom Computing in Palo Alto as Senior Optical Physicist. Fathom is building optical accelerators for deep learning. Optics carries the promise of low energy arithmetic operations and efficient data communication. These potential advantages have been recognized for a long time, but the relentless advance of silicon has meant that optics has yet to make a direct impact in computing. Many machine learning problems are well-ordered, large-scale, and hungry for energy and interconnect bandwidth, and may thus be the perfect application for optical computing. Fingers crossed!
